The Coolhaus Shop – Pushing Dessert Boundaries

The Coolhaus Shop: Pushing the Boundaries of Traditional Dessert

By Samantha Dockser

The Coolhaus Shop, with storefronts in Culver City and Pasadena, has been pushing the boundaries of traditional dessert with their architecturally inspired ice cream and cookie creations since 2008.

Coolhaus Confetti Cookie and Strawberries and Cream Ice Cream

Created by Natasha Case and Freya Estreller, this operation began in a beat-up old postal van they bought off Craigslist. The two trekked out to the world-famous Coachella Valley Music Festival in April 2009 to make their debut. Flash forward a few years…now Coolhaus sells over 100 ice cream flavors and over 20 cookie options, many of which can be found wholesale in 4000 stores nationwide. That means in combining the cookies and the ice cream, there are over 500 ice cream sandwiches to try!

Coolhaus is known for their crazy flavors. When I checked out the Culver City shop, it sure didn’t disappoint. Angela, the media and brand strategist at Coolhaus, explained to be that Freya (one of the co-founders) was not a fan of super sweet ice cream. Thus leading to the creation of Fried Chicken and Waffles ice cream, the first crazy, savory flavor offered by Coolhaus. Clearly it was a hit!

The daily menu now offers options like “Fast Food,” which is made of Salted Tahitian Vanilla Bean, chocolate malt balls, and shoestring French fries. Yes, you read that correctly. There are real fries in this ice cream. And it was actually crazy delicious. With this flavor, never again will you have to dip your fries into your milkshake. If you look closely below, you can see the fries! The cookie bowl holding the ice cream is a new offering at Coolhaus, too.

Angela explained Coolhaus also loves to do partnerships. Currently they are teamed up with Quentin Tarantino himself. In honor of The Hateful Eight movie premier, together Coolhaus and Tarantino crafted The Hateful Eight ice cream. Without spoiling the movie, three important components are a blizzard, blood, and coffee. So The Hateful Eight ice cream consists of Salted Tahitian Vanilla Bean (the blizzard,) cherry swirls (the blood,) and chocolate covered espresso beans (the coffee.)

Coolhaus also has several themed ice cream lines. These include a breakfast line (featuring flavors like Leggo My Eggo ice cream which goes great with a Belgian waffle cookie,) a boozy line (including flavors like Beer and Pretzels,) and even a Jewish deli line (which most notably served Pastrami ice cream on a Marble Rye cookie.)

And for the DIY ice cream maker at home, Coolhaus sells Bacon Salt, Fried Chicken Caramel Sauce, which really is infused with chicken skin, and as of last year, their very own cookbook, so you can create these crazy flavors yourself.

Coolhaus Gifts options

Coolhaus takes the ice cream sandwich to the next level. With new flavors of ice cream and cookies coming out almost ever month, I know I’ll be back soon to check out the latest crazy yet delicious combinations. Go to their website to find a storefront, food truck, or wholesale store near you!
