There are times when you discover an extraordinary restaurant where scrumptious cuisine, affable service and a special energy coexist. I was lucky enough to have found a place like that called Remiz in Budapest, Hungary.
Nestled north of the gorgeous castle in the quiet Buda side of the country is where you will find this gem. It is definitely worth the 15 minute cab ride from the more popular Pest side. As one enters Remiz, an adorable old lady playing the piano makes you smile as the old school vibe sinks in. The nostalgic family/customer photos strewn across the wall inspire an inviting aura.
Remiz was literally built upon a foundation of love. The money to create it was crowdfunded by contributions from friends, family and local food enthusiasts. All money donated to build the restaurant, was paid back plus 50% in a tab at Remiz. The back room is full of tenured patrons eating and playing cards to their heart’s and belly’s delight. The patrons and employees are like a big happy family. Zsolt was one of the best waiters I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. He felt like an old friend bringing me food from his kitchen instead of a worker and his recommendations were brilliant.
They mixed traditional Hungarian cuisine with some modern interpretations. The Wiener Schnitzel had an enrapturing honey glazed corn flake crust, which was the best chicken coating I’ve ever had. Their accompanying ginger salad was a fantastic version with sushi style chunks of ginger topping a flavorful dressed salad.
The Crispy Catfish came with a spicy tagliatelle with truffles. The fish was profoundly fresh, soft, succulent and crispy.
Both versions of the lava stones Spare Ribs were ginormous and deliriously tasty. The Honey-Chilli flavored ones have a special place in my palate.
The dessert platter was gorgeous. My favorite component was the mesmerizing thin dark chocolate cookie that encased walnuts and oranges.
Remiz is an incredible establishment that will leave both your stomachs and hearts full of warm deliciousness. It is an absolute MUST TRY for your next trip to Budapest. Make sure you experience this magical place to eat.
