Laborejo Restaurant is a new organic GastroLab in Doral that just opened this month! The vegan-centric concept by Bocas Group mainly features plant-based delicacies, but can also please pescatarians with seafood options. Working with a fish supplier that’s in alliance with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch, a program that empowers consumers and business to make choices for healthy oceans. However, the menu is free of red meats, poultry, and pork. They are committed to offering natural, eco-friendly and sustainable as much as possible.
Conveniently located just off the highway and minutes from MIA airport, I’d recommend it both to locals and even those with time to kill on a lay-over. The restaurant’s decor is a mix of modern and rustic, with hints of greenery all over. From the moss walls to succulent arrangements. And showing the care for detail and presentation is clear. From the hip denim uniform to the way the food is plated. But what most impressed us is Laborejo Restaurant’s innovative fare:
Appetizers
Why save best for last when you can start off with Organic “Kra”? I never knew I was a fan of Okra until I had these in an Almond Tempura and Asian Blood Orange Sauce. Balancing sweet and tangy, with just the perfect crunch! Though just as delicious is the Earth & Ground Hummus Trio. A classic take on a Hummus Trio with dry Chilies, Garlic and Parsley. It’s served with Olive Oil and Pine Nuts accompanied with Pickles, Micro Radishes and Vegan Bread.
Main Dishes
Laborejo GastroLab also serves classic favorites like burgers, pizza, and sushi, with their unique twists and plant-based options, of course. Featuring sushi rolls made out of Eggplant or my fave, the Mushroom Sushi. With Sweet and Sour Sauce, Wakame, Wasabi, and Bamboo Sprouts (and the option to add Tuna for my fish lovers). And though I’m not a big fan of ‘shrooms, they’ve certainly got a way with them because I found the Mushroom Pizza just as tasty! It comes with black olives, roasted pearl onions, fresh basil, spinach, and a slightly sweet aftertaste I love. There’s also Avocado Pizza because who wouldn’t want to merge two of modern day’s favorite foods? And because everyone loves a good juicy burger, even vegans, The Possible Gastro Burger ( with Impossible Meat, mkGarlic Cream, grilled Romaine Lettuce, and roasted Tomatoes ) does more than satisfy the craving!
Dessert
The dessert menu is inspired by the four elements of nature: earth, fire, water and air. The Ananas Comosus represents air and combines different flavors and textures. The first layer is Fresh Pineapple Brunoise, followed by Cinnamon Crumbs and Tender Pineapple. Then it’s topped with Turmeric, Mango and Ginger Sorbet! And finished with a light foam of Orange Liqueur to symbolize air, and edible flowers for that “extra oomph!” ( As if needed. )
Following its promise of delivering nutritious food made for your senses, everything from the sight to taste is mesmerizing. Almost too pretty to eat, but too tempting not to… And with carefully selected ingredients, you can feel good about devouring!
