The 4th of July may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the red, white, and blue party has to stop. Bastille Day, French National Day, is right around the corner! Pitchoun! Bakery in downtown LA has got your party covered! This family-owned French café serves freshly-baked breads, pastries, salads, soups and sandwiches, all of which are prepared from scratch each morning.

From July 11 to July 17, Pitchoun! will be offering several specials in spirit of the French national holiday.

And as someone who doesn’t speak French, I can admit that sometimes it’s intimidating to try to order anything that isn’t a chocolate croissant. But French husband-wife duo, Frédéric and Fabienne Soulies, and owners of Los Angeles’ only traditional French bakery, Pitchoun!, are pastry experts and have devised a crafty guide to French pastries.

Here are a few of their favorites…

Croissant: A well-known pastry but did you know, French culinary law that states croissants made with 100% real butter must be straight? Croissants that use any other type of product, for example, margarine, cannot be straight. Pitchoun! stays true to the law, ensuring all croissants are made straight.

Beignets: Otherwise referred to as a “fritter”, beignets are fried pastries made from deep-fried choux pastry, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Introduced to America through French colonists, it soon became a traditional New Orleans specialty.

Kouig-Amann: Meaning “butter cake” in the Celtic language of France’s Brittany region, the Kouign-Amann is made with butter, sugar and salt – it’s a bomb of calories, but worth every bite, according to Fabienne Soulies. Baked with croissant dough enriched with butter, sugar and topped with a dash of salt, these pastries have been popping up all of America.

Pitchoun! Bakery is a French escape in the middle of Los Angeles, and whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend has never consumed her weight in French pastries. So be sure to stop by Pitchoun! Bakery to celebrate Bastille Day the truly Parisian way.
