Art Basel Guide 2018 – Music, Parties & Art Fairs

Art Basel Guide 2018 – Music, Parties & Art Fairs

Art Basel 2018 returns to Miami over the week of December 4th to 9th. Art Basel is the time of year where Miami flourishes with art, music, and food. This year will be the biggest year yet, welcoming artists from all over the world to hosts some of the most eccentric and eclectic art exhibitions and shows. At night, Miami comes to life with special events across the city from Wynwood to South Beach. Check out our guide to find out everything you need to know about Art Basel:

Before we dive in, let us highlight 3 events that we DEMAND you attend to make sure you have a Phenomenal Basel. There are our 3 Basel Musts!

“The Art of Banksy”

We attended this event and thought it was hilarious, powerful and riveting. Try to spend a couple hours reading his brilliant quotes and watching the videos to truly understand how unique, creative and iconic Bansky truly is!

“The Art of Banksy”– On Friday, November 30, Miami will welcome the US premiere of “The Art of Banksy”, an acclaimed showcase featuring 80 original works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. Banksy, whose identity is the art world’s biggest secret, is an enigmatic artist and world-recognized political activist. His graffiti-influenced stencil technique, often combined with anti-establishment slogans, is immediately recognizable and never fails to generate attention.

“The Art of Banksy,” curated by Steve Lazarides, the artist’s former agent, displays the world’s largest collection of Banksy’s works and only features pieces that were created by Banksy for private art collectors. The collection offers original paintings, prints, sculptures and rarely seen pieces. Included in the exhibition is the iconic “Balloon Girl” piece, which was ranked in 2017 as “The United Kingdom’s number one favorite artwork,” the “Flag Wall,” an urbanized take on the famous picture of soldiers raising the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima, and many other pieces, no less compelling and equally thought-provoking.

The Miami exhibit will be mounted in Magic City Studios at 6301 NE 4th Ave, in an area within Little Haiti known as Miami’s Magic City Innovation District. This prestigious exhibition of originals – all privately owned by collectors – offers a rare opportunity for South Florida to enter Banksy’s world in a 20,000 square foot raw warehouse-style space which was specifically chosen as it resembles spaces where Banksy and Steve Lazarides previously mounted shows together. “The Art of Banksy” exhibition will be open Monday through Sunday from 12PM – 9PM.

RAW POP UP

Interdisciplinary collective RAW POP UP is taking over 43,000 square feet at a former department store in the rapidly transforming neighborhood of Downtown Miami’s Flagler Street district. In collaboration with 80+ creators using Aetna Realty’s property, RAW POP UP is producing a five-day, two-floor multisensory experience of art, music and technology. RAW POP UP will bring site-specific installations and immersive performances in settings like diners, beauty parlors and pre-civil rights “separate but equal” bathrooms during Art Basel from December 5th to December 9th 2018. The guests experience will be guided throughout at least 10 different historical environments existing from the 1920s until today. In the context of a department store from a lost era, it will make every single guest question our generational evolution and their personal contributions to society.

Once you step into RAW POP UP’s abandoned department store, 16 of your senses gradually awaken: vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell, intuition, pressure, itch temperature, pain, thirst, hunger, direction, time, muscle tension, proprioception, and equilibrioception. The five known senses allow us to experience the outside world, whereas others allow us to understand our physical place in the world. Our senses actively influence art at RAW POP UP, transcending the “look-don’t-touch” boundary found within the traditional art context.

Through immersive performances and interactive art installations, guests are asked to rethink values that are inherited from their past and the meaning it has on contemporary lifestyles. With traditional retail experiences quickly fading, guests are transported by creators and performers into the past, bringing their current mindsets along to interact with forgotten objects and lost ideals. Which principles are we keeping and letting go of in order to create a better present and future? During this time travel experience, you are asked to measure our generation’s progress in relation to your own personal role in contributing to present-day culture.

This experience induces ephemeral nostalgia and challenges us to both value and question our modern ways of living. RAW POP UP encourages a symbiotic relationship between art, the audience and the space. Guests may touch, taste, feel and experience installations and performances, and go beyond usual sensory expectations. RAW POP UP ends with an invitation to our pop up bar, a curated music experience from a fake future featuring local and international musicians.

Once guests travel back to Miami’s past, they naturally ponder on its future growth. Aetna has given RAW POP UP the opportunity to utilize its property during Art Basel in an effort to raise awareness of the dynamic resurgence of Downtown Miami and also to contribute to present day culture.

RAW POP UP opens during the following times:

December 5th 8pm – 3am (21+)

December 6th 8pm – 3am (21+)

December 7th 8pm – 3am (21+)

December 8th 8pm – 3am (21+)

December 9th 2pm – 8pm (All Ages)

ARTECHOUSE

ARTECHOUSE is an innovative art space dedicated to showcasing experiential large scale installations. Since its founding in June 2017, longtime art ambassadors, Sandro Kereselidze and Tati Pastukhova, have curated and collaborated directly with artists in the field of the new media technologies to produce numerous groundbreaking exhibitions that allow for digital artists to shed new light on the creative boundaries between art and technology.

Spearheading the presentation of new media and technology-based artwork that because of logistics or budgetary restrictions cannot be shown in traditional venues, ARTECHOUSE has expanded its program from Washington D.C. to Albuquerque, New Mexico, more recently announcing a Miami debut to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, and confidentially, its program will expand to New York in 2019. With over 300,000 visitors to date, ARTECHOUSE has single-handedly fostered new conversations at the crossroads of art, science and technology and given countless visitors the opportunity to experience art like never before. The expansions to Miami and New York will allow for ARTECHOUSE to develop their partnerships with internationally recognized digital artists, amplifying their programming to reach global audiences.

This is an important example of an initiative lead by individuals who are committed to fostering the next generation of artists, as well as elevating the field of new media-based art as one of the breakthrough mediums of the 21st century.

Having wowed crowds during Miami Music Week last March, premier global party purveyor elrow makes a triumphant return to Miami on December 6th with “The Rowmuda Triangle” at Story Nightclub. The nautically themed extravaganza follows three wildly successful, sold-out gatherings at New York’s Avant Gardner and open-air venue Brooklyn Mirage, in addition to its Las Vegas debut at The Wynn during their Art of The Wild October weekend takeover. “After an incredible show in New York City featuring Rowmuda Triangle, we are excited to bring this party to our Miami fans for elrow’s first Art Basel edition.” says elrow Special Advisor Michael Julian.

Inspired by the mysteries behind the Bermuda Triangle, the immersive Rowmuda Triangle party celebrates an odyssey that began aboard a pirate ship from Ibiza and went off course near Atlantis. Swallowed whole by a mysterious sea creature called the Craken, the surreal party continued in the belly of the beast and ultimately became known as “The Party of Eternal Happiness”. Bringing a taste of Ibiza to Miami for Art Basel, this wild fiesta is full of shipwrecks, sunken airplanes, insane sea creatures, and hippy communes under the sea. Story’s 17,000 square foot size makes it the perfect venue for a larger-than-life event like The Rowmuda Triangle. Elrow’s musical line up, which features the world’s most trending house music artists, will be announced next week.

Launched in Barcelona in 2010, elrow is the modern iteration of an entertainment family dynasty that stretches back almost 150 years. Currently at the helm of the multimedia conglomerate are Juan Arnau Lasierra (CEO) and Cruz Arnau Lasierra (Marketing Director), who consider “spectacle, music, color and happiness” an inherent part of elrow’s DNA.  Their fantasy-driven philosophy re-imagines world traditions and cultures throughout the ages, transforming them into otherworldly experiences. In 2018 the Arnaus—dubbed “the Medicis of raving” by The Guardian—proved once again that they are without comparison when it comes to staging larger-than-life, immersive experiences that push the boundaries of nightclubbing.

Blnk Cnvs and Groove Cruise present the OG of house music, Kaskade, at Soho Studios on Saturday December 8th. Also joining the party is J Worra, Lokii and Charles Meyer. Join the GC Fam by purchasing tickets here. Sea you on the dance floor! Also, check out our review of Groove Cruise to find out all the magic that is Groove Cruise.

Faena Festival: This Is Not America features commissions, installations, videos and performances from a range of incredible artists, including Derrick Adams, Miya Ando, Cecilia Bengolea, Joseph Beuys, Ana Teresa Fernández, Alfredo Jaar, Eugene Jarecki, Isabel Lewis, Boris Mitic, Luna Paiva, George Sánchez-Calderón, Tavares Strachan, Wu Tsang and boychild, Agustina Woodgate and Rev. Houston R. Cypress. The theme of the inaugural Faena Festival, “This Is Not America” is keyed to Miami’s enduring role as a port that welcomes migrants, refugees and tourists across the U.S. and the Americas, and from countries around the world. The festival engages with the multiplicity of communities and cultures and the palimpsest of histories that have created the Americas while responding specifically to Miami as its hemispheric hub.
