Southern California’s Slater’s 50/50 unveils the Totcho Burger

Slater’s 50/50’s Burger of the Month: The Totcho Burger

By Michael Vallens

Slater’s 50/50 is the brainchild of Southern California native Scott Slater.  Constructing the most insanely amazing burgers is Scott’s main goal and business has been thriving ever since opening in 2009.

The 50/50 in the name refers to the fun fact that Slater’s uses a patty that contains 50% ground beef and 50% ground bacon. This recipe has proven to be unique enough to help make Slater’s 50/50  stand out in LA’s competitive burger world.

Scott was kind enough to give us a preview of Slater’s 50/50’s  Burger of the Month for May 2017, The Totcho Burger. But before we jump to the burger, there were a couple of tasty appetizers to sample.

First out was a cocktail tray filled with Bacon-wrapped Frankfurters known as 50/50-Furter. That’s right, the frankfurters contain ground bacon. You might think that this would be bacon overload, thankfully there is no such thing. The small bite was brimming with flavor and was a nice compliment to Slater’s 50/50 Watermelon Lemonade. Be sure to try one of Slater’s 50/50 Frankfurters today!

The group was then presented with the sinfully tasty The Vampire Dip, a sourdough bread bowl filled with a three-cheese blend, artichokes and roasted garlic with pita chips and fresh cut veggies.

The creamy dip was savory and the artichoke lent it’s earthiness to this cheat-day treat. Whether you dip veggies, pita chips or pieces of the bread bowl itself, satisfaction is guaranteed!

Now, on to this magnificent burger creation known as The Totcho Burger inspired by the Vulgar Chef. This burger patty is marinated with carne asada spices and same goes for the bacon. In addition, the Totcho Burger is topped with pepper jack cheese, taco seasoned tater tots, nacho cheese, chorizo crumbles, cilantro-lime sour cream, guacamole, fresh jalapenos all on a bacon telera roll.

The Totcho Burger was a sight to behold. The presentation was a work of art with all ingredients prepared to perfection. With plenty of napkins within reaching distance, I decided there was no better time than now to dive into this creative construction.

This burger was spiced just right, with the cilantro-lime sour cream and fresh jalapeno cut through the rich nacho cheese and carne asada marinated patty and bacon. The tots were abundant and provide an excellent textural contrast to the rest of the ingredients. The bacon telera roll was fresh and sturdy enough to hold the insane amount items within The Totcho Burger.

The burger is intimidating in size but tastes so good that one might compromise their morals to devour the entire plate without sharing.
