Salt & Straw Brings Deliciously Unique Handmade Ice Cream to Studio City

By Samantha Dockser

Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, Dill Flowers & Fennell Pollen, Rose Water & Apple Bitters. Yes, I am talking about ice cream. Ridiculously scrumptious ice cream from Salt & Straw.

Salt & Straw, a well-established LA favorite ice cream spot, is opening up their newest shop in Studio City on Saturday May 14th.

Founded in Portland, this Farm to Cone ice cream shop haven is about to celebrate its 5th year anniversary. The owner, Kim, explains that Salt & Straw emphasizes community and fitting into already tight knit communities. Their ingredients are all farm fresh and local, from their honey to their dairy products.

Kim’s cousin, Tyler, makes all the ice cream and is constantly inventing newer and more unique flavors than before. Each month Salt & Straw releases five new flavors. This month, the flavor profile honors Los Angeles Spring, with tastes of flowers and rhubarb. The flavors include: Wildflower Honey with Ricotta Walnut Lace Cookies, Rose Water & Apple Bitters, Dill Flowers & Fennel Pollen, Grand Poppy Sorbet with Spring Flowers, and Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise, which somehow tastes like hot and crumbly pie in your mouth. So good!

And rumor has it next month is all about fermented flavors, so I know I’ll have to stop in again really soon.

And then there are the Salt & Straw menu staples. The first flavor you HAVE to try when you get to any Salt & Straw is the Sea Salt Ice Cream with Caramel Ribbons. This flavor was developed with the James Beard award winning salt expert (yes, you read that correctly) Mark Bitterman of Portland’s The Meadow. Combined with hand-burned caramel, the salt and the sweet balance perfectly in this savory treat.

Another favorite flavor of mine was the Stumptown Compartes Love Nuts. This rich coffee ice cream blended with chocolate-dipped caramel-coated pecans is to die for.

For a comprehensive list of flavors, stop in at a store or check out their website. And to stay up to date with their latest flavors of the month by joining the Salt & Straw Seasonal Pint Club! I know I’ll be stopping in again soon to test my taste buds with their newest scoop sensations.
