We Are Scientists Play Bowery Ballroom After Release of ‘Megaplex’
By Lauren Johnson
We Are Scientists are taking over the country by storm. After the release of their newest album, Megaplex, the band – made up of guitarist/vocalist Keith Murray and bass guitarist Chris Cain – launched their North American tour in Boston on June 13 before heading over to the Bowery Ballroom for an epic show on June 16. The duo were upbeat and energetic, with a strong fan base that showed up early to pack the house for their on-stage arrival.
We Are Scientists began their set with one of their newest songs – “Your Light Has Changed” – from their latest album, while of course mixing in some fan favorites from previous records. The vibe to their new music is markedly different from the band’s earlier albums. Chris Cain explained, “In the past we’ve used our music to educate, to enlighten, to awaken people to the depth and complexity of moral concerns. This time, we really wanted to drop a fun-bomb. Something to dance to.”
People definitely got their feet moving as the band continued to play the night away, the sound reverberating throughout the intimate space of this popular downtown venue. We are Scientists consistently engaged and connected with audience members, infusing their set with humorous back and forth banter that got the crowd riled up. “You guys are a great audience – of course, I don’t think we would say that anyone was a bad audience, that’s probably not the best idea,” Keith joked. “Yeah, it’s like going on a date with someone who brings their dog, you’re not going to tell them that it’s an ugly dog – unless it’s some sort of mangled chihuahua mixed with a lab…” Chris chimed in. The band was full of jokes as they interacted with their fans the entire night. At one point, Chris even jumped on top of an audience member’s shoulders and rocked out on his bass in the midst of the crowd.
It was certainly a show to remember and an excellent way to kick off the summer music season.
