W Fort Lauderdale Review- A Staycation to Detox, Retox, Repeat.
Fort Lauderdale is a culture-rich city, home to upscale establishments and serene views of beaches and canals. To take in its full glory I checked into the enchanting & luxurious W Fort Lauderdale hotel. Its motto “Detox.Retox.Repeat.” appealing to my own philosophy that balance is the key to life.
W Fort Lauderdale
Having gone through a $55 million dollar renovation in 2018, a testament of the importance its team puts into staying fresh and updated, every square foot of the property, from its 517 guest rooms, suites, and residential suites, AWAY Spa, to the WET deck pool, is sure to mesmerize you. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing stay, a lively experience, or a perfect mix of both. Even the decor and design manage to seamlessly blend polished and elegant with the energetic and bold aesthetic the W Hotels are known for. Their amenities, activities, services, and endless options made to cater to any mood.
The Rooms
I love modern decor but sometimes it can lack personality and be too plain for my taste. That wasn’t the case here… The door opens up to a sleek hallway where you’ll find a spacious closet with a safe to store your valuables and a bathroom that’s, dare I say “sexy”? The toilet is concealed, but the large vanity and glass shower are fully exposed. Not to worry though, if you’d like a bit more privacy, the glass that looks into the bedroom is frosted, and the open layout allows for ample soaking and shower-singing time without suffocating in a steam cloud which usually happens in my small, closed-off one back at home… Â I freaked out when I noticed I’d forgotten to pack my face wash, but was ecstatic to find lots of toiletries and Bliss products, even the Fabulous Foaming Face Wash! You can tell they really put thought into making your stay as effortless and comfortable as possible despite how little the details may be.
Past the bathroom and full-length mirror (perfect for outfit shots!) awaited a huge King bed, that felt like a soft marshmallowy dream, but the true WOW factor is the striking flooring… Usually I hate carpet, but I was absolutely mesmerized walking on this masterpiece, it’s almost like the abstract shades of blue and white are meant to resemble the ocean… Though if I wanted a sight of the real thing, my balcony (or even bed) gave me full views. Is it weird that I was also super impressed with their mini-bar? Not only is it fully stocked, but golden! And if that’s not enough, directly above is the Mixbar equipped with snacks, sun-protection, and even a “couple’s kit”.
With all the hotel’s services and amenities, and bustling surroundings, I doubt you’ll want to want hole up in the room despite its beauty, but there’s also a desk with a coffee maker if you need to get some work done or a huge TV if you just wanna relax and sink into the cozy bed.
4th Floor
Known as the heart of the hotel, the 4th floor is where to check-in and visit concierge, and its also home to AWAY Spa, SUSHI bar, outdoor terrace, Bungalow meeting space, and its signature Living Room. A laid-back lounge space perfect for sipping on cocktails and people watching during the day, or a late night hotspot with pulsating programming.
• Monday are a B@#&%!
• Tuesday – Bollywood Night
• Wednesday – The Studio
• Thursday – Off the Wall Thursdays
• Friday – Heat Wave
• Saturday – Neon Nights
• Sunday – Saxxxy Sundays
Me and my girlfriends actually had a Mixology Lesson in the Living Room where we learned to make our own mojitos! A more interesting approach to going drinking with friends…
AWAY Spa
“Away” is exactly the state I felt in every time I waked into the Spa, like floating off into nirvana… but without any of the overdone “zen” decor. Instead there’s vivid colors and a tropical, fresh vibe.
As a part of the renovation, AWAY Spa aligns with the W Hotels’ updated aesthetic, where despite its boldness the ambiance is relaxed. But its design isn’t the only upgrade as W Fort Lauderdale is the first AWAY spa location that offers a full beauty menu in addition to a lineup of massages, facials, and full-body treatments. It takes up 3,778 sq feet and offers a total of five treatment rooms, including one for couples. I had the Detox Body Treatment, where my body was scrubbed and cleaned off with warm towels that immediately did wonders to soothe my muscles. The massage that followed, as I was lathered in their detoxing concoction, was as divine. My scalp also got some TLC while I was wrapped up cocoon-style to allow the antioxidants and vitamins to sink in. I may not have emerged from it with wings, but I did have shiny silky skin!
I also fell in love with the Pedicure Station, located right by the Glam Station where you can come in for a quick Makeup Dusting or be fully transformed with a Full Make-Up Look using airbrush, lashes, etc. and hair styling tools. I personally didn’t have any of these services but I overheard how particular the Artist was about delivering the client’s exact desires. And my pedicurist was just as attentive, though the pedicure massage chair was delightful, it was no match for the love she gave my feet and legs… Also worth mentioning is the complimentary elixir refreshment you receive upon arrival, ’cause I even asked for seconds so I could enjoy during this service!
If you’re short on time, you can still get pampered with a 10 to 25 minute Quick Fix massage. Quality vs quantity proves true because the short time had no effect on how rejuvenating it was! Don’t be fooled by the massage chair, instantly horrified me thinking I was about receive a shopping mall experience. It was state-of-the-art (both the chair and massage) with soothing music and adjustable positioning so I could be at my comfiest while receiving 25 minutes of pure neck, shoulder and back bliss. Though hard to walk away from, I arrived back to my room just in time for an epic sunset viewing with front-row seats from my private balcony.
Get Wet
Wet East
Normally with such a gorgeous beach right across, I would’t pay much mind to the pool. But this one was too unique and breathtaking not to end up on a few Instagram posts. If the Art-Deco inspired tiled deck doesn’t impress you, the staircase from the 4th to 5th floor (where the pool is located) is covered in glass allowing an under-and-over water peekaboo of the happy swimmers.
Wet West
This was my getaway spot when I wanted to get some work done under the sun and in between dips! It’s more secluded, and also has bar service and comfy loungers like West East, which doesn’t have a hot tub but fortunately my search of one is what lead me here.
P.A.W (Pets Are Welcomed)
Not only is W Fort Lauderdale family-friendly, they’re totally welcoming of your fur babies too. A huge plus for those who want their BFF in on the fun and though it’s becoming more common to see pet menus, this one put a smile on my face from ear to ear! Though I’m happy dogs are so widely accepted, it’s nice see them being inclusive of cats which is more rare.
With a menu that’s available 24 hours a day, you can leave your baby with a gourmet meal while you head out to grab your own. Choose from options like Culinary Canine consisting of grilled chicken, oats and veggies, and Feline Fresh, a dish of salmon and veggies.
Whatever/Whenever
With a Whatever/Whenever button in every room, all your (legal) wishes are their command.
Eats
Fort Lauderdale is home to plenty culinary delights, but you don’t have to stray too far. A quick elevator ride to the ground floor will put you at the entrance of two delicious restaurants under the helm of Stephen Starr, winner of a James Beard Award as best restaurateur in the country.
Disclaimer: No need to feel guilty! There’s a 24hr Fitness Center on the 5th floor and complimentary bootcamp/yoga classes on the beach every morning.
El Vez
This was my most visited spot on the trip! Out of my three night stay I visited four times, making sure I said goodbye to its addicting Mexican fare before check-out. Normally I opt for a comfy room-service breakfast, but I got hooked on their Crab & Avocado Benedict and indulged for the rest of my stay. Though their dinner menu is just as superb, allowing you to choose between Grilled Local Snapper Tacos or a Whole Fried Yellowtail Gulf of Mexico Style! There’s so much to try but I highly recommend the Tuna Tostadas and Grilled Corn with Chipotle Aioli and Queso Cotija, which may be have been one of the most memorable bites.
I alternated between indoor and outdoor seating on my visits, as some days I felt like enjoying my meal and ocean views on their patio. On others, the vibrant vibe and murals inside drew me in. Their drink menu is extensive, so if you’re having a hard time choosing I assure the Lavender-Honey Jalapeño Margarita won’t dissapoint!
Steak 954
Everything about this place was enchanting. From the elegant ambiance to the steaks and seafood. Already flavorful but highly elevated by the sauces which I drenched my plate in… Their sides and apps are also stellar, the Local Burrata and Whipped Potatoes had me drooling. Though the food was incredible, it was the 2,000 gallon jellyfish tank which had the entire table in a trance. If paying a visit I’d highly try to get a seat close by! Nothing better than enjoying a classy dinner and glass of wine while observing bioluminescent creatures dance…
P.S. don’t forget to order cookies! Even if you’re full, they made the perfect movie snack back in my room…
SUSHI Bar
Conveniently located on the 4th floor, and just right below the pool for a post-dip lunch, W Fort Lauderdale’s SUSHI bar is a must for raw seafood lovers! With a menu led by Chef Shoji Hiyakawa, a protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto and freshness you can taste, all options are appealing but please try the Peppered Tuna Tataki. This is the perfect spot for a Sushi and Sake date followed by a social night in the Living Room.
The Neighborhood
Even the hotel’s location offers perfect balance, giving you a chance to explore the up-beat city life and natural wonders. With sugar sand and welcoming waters right across ( not to mention its amenities ) I know it’s easy not to ever wanna leave, but I promise the surroundings are worth adventuring!
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and Park & Ocean
Just a short bike ride away lays a natural oasis, and don’t worry about having to chase one down the sidewalk and needing an app to use it… Just head to Concierge for a complimentary bike rental! Of course there’s other ways of getting there, but personally peddling along the coast sounds funner.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park offers a wild escape with Ranger-guided tours, walking trails, direct access to the beach, fishing, and more. It’s also home to Park & Ocean, a beachside eatery and bar that will fill your tummy and need for adventure. Offering rentals from beach gear to jet-skis and more, as well as tours. Our group did the morning Guided Eco Tour, where we paddled out a lagoon on kayaks and canoes.
I felt suddenly transported from my chic, urban surroundings to a pristine lush tropical mini jungle. Our guide was knowledgeable but felt like just another friend from the group. He was quick to point out the gopher turtles, fish, aquatic vegetation, birds, and fill us in on its history. Added to my “must-do’s” is their Full Moon Tour. This experience, from start to finish, was my favorite of the trip.
Shooters Waterfront
Though you’ll find plenty of food options at W Fort Lauderdale to satisfy any palette, I had to try out one of the city’s most iconic dining spot, Shooters Waterfront. Classy, but with a laid-back vibe. We shared a spread of appetizers, each one mouth-watering. I had a New England Lobster Roll all by myself while eyeing my girlfriend’s Ahi Tuna Salad, though throughly enjoying my own order. All the drinks are also tempting, but my fave is the Guava Martini made with Real McCoy rum, guava purée, and lime.
Enjoy your meal dock-side for views of the water and yachts cruising and stopping by. And though, you’re welcome to arrive by car, you don’t need to be a millionaire to see why Fort Lauderdale is known as “the Venice of America”. Conveniently, this restaurant is one of the Water Taxi’s stop, giving you a chance to cruise the many waterways, gorgeous scenery, and historical info without having to do any of the boating yourself.
Las Olas
Las Olas translates from Spanish into “The Waves”, fitting since this is another Water Taxi stop. This time we opted for a ride on land for a different view. The Free Ride makes it an effortless and unique experience, picking you up right at the hotel in their gas-free electric shuttles. We pulled up to the boulevard in eco-friendly style! Filled with restaurants, galleries, shops and more, here’s some of what I enjoyed most:
Be Elektric Boutique
I love online shopping, but doing so in the real world usually makes me anxious. The small, organized boutique made it comfy, without lacking diversity (of price and product). Carrying top brands like For Love & Lemons, a fave of mine, and fashion for all genders, it’s perfect for getting trendy gifts for others and yourself. The associates were all attentive while giving me space.
New River Fine Art
If you’ve ever felt intimated by art galleries, you’re not alone. Sometimes it’s the cold atmosphere or pretentious attitude. But all that shines through here is the passion! Wether you’re an interested buyer or a curious appreciator, they take their time to instruct you and show you that being an art-collector isn’t just for someone with loads to spare. Don’t doubt the quality though, I even got to see a Warhol!
Louie Bossi
One of Las Olas’ busiest Italian Ristorante, Louie Bossi is a must! Though a few hours wait is worth it, we recommend reservations on any night. Make sure to ask for outdoor sitting for the most enchanting fairytale setting. I’m definitely planning my next group celebration under their victorian steel gazebo. So many cocktails to choose from, but if you like champagne and popsicles I’d go for the Prosecco Pop. For entrees I had a side and Bruschetta. They have many variations like Caponata or Mushroom Conserva, but I went with a traditional Tomatoes and Basil. The Spagghetti Cacio E Pepe seasoned with Aged Pecorino and Black Pepper, sounds simple but just as flavorful as all the other bites of pasta I had from my friend’s plates. Though none were main courses, they were enough to get boxed up and devoured a few hours later in my room.
Butterfly World
World’s largest butterfly park, Butterfly World is worth the half-an-hour or so drive. Though butterflies are discouraged from being touched for their safety, you can get up close and personal with lorikeets! With many more bird species flying through the 6 aviaries. Plants, flowers, and vines grow everywhere, and you can’t help but be perplexed by the 150+ species of butterflies that live there. Perfect for all ages, even adults screamed in joy whenever one came gliding by. Don’t forget to visit the educational Bug Zoo and make an exit through the gift shop. Call me crazy but I’m now the mother of over 1,000 lady bugs…
Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 11am-5pm (Admission closes at 4pm). Adults $29.95, children 3-11 $21.95, under 3 free.

Overview
While some vacations can be so upbeat they become exhausting, and others some relaxing they’re almost boring, this one delivered the balance I went searching for. Offering plenty tranquil moments while being an overall vivacious experience! With so much left to see and returning for, Fort Lauderdale is sure to have me back. And though I like to throw in a bit of critique for full honesty, I can truthfully say the only dreadful part was having to ever check out…
