Tryst Coffeehouse Review

Tryst Coffeehouse inside

Low lighting, candles, a nice, warm drink … is this foreplay? No, it’s just Tryst Coffeehouse, a Washington, D.C., coffee lounge known for its young, artsy vibe and plush couches. The coffee shop and bar is located in Adams Morgan, a D.C. neighborhood with a reputation for its lively nightlife and eclectic crowd. While you could always romp around with shots, shots and more shots at nearby bars like Roofers Union or Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar, you can also relax in the laidback atmosphere of Tryst.

Tryst Coffeehouse seating

At Tryst, you’re more likely to find millennials hidden behind their laptops with a Chaipuccino in hand than throwing back a cocktail or jager bomb. The coffee shop has a full bar with options like the Queen of Hearts (Gordon’s gin, Pimms and savory beet cucumber juice in a Collins glass), lavender hot chocolate and a Pacific vanilla chai latte.

Tryst Coffeehouse dining

Don’t mistake Tryst for a knockoff Starbucks that’s trying too hard to be hip, though. This coffeehouse features well-roasted coffee and good company. Don’t expect to find a seat within the first minute of your arrival, as there are always people populating the plush couches. Despite the wait, the food, free Wi-Fi and live musical performances are worth it. Just remember that the Wi-Fi shuts down Friday at 8 p.m. and is back in action on Sunday at the same time.

If you’re wondering if those are animal crackers next to that Chaipuccino you’re absolutely right. This warm and welcoming drink is a cinnamon nutmeg delight, topped with a heart drawn from milk. The shot of espresso in the masala chai gives this drink a much-needed kick to make sure you don’t fall asleep on one of the comfy couches.
Tryst Coffeehouse strawberry and brie crostini

Crisp, fresh and toasted oh-so-perfectly. This is the Strawberry and Brie Crostini, a dish that is bound to make you crack a smile from the sweet honey drizzled on top. While located in the “To Share” column of the menu, feel free to keep them all to yourself because — obviously — you’re worth it.

Tryst Coffeehouse Chorizo and Feta Quiche

Hungry, but don’t want to stuff yourself like a turkey? For those of us who want a good lunch, but don’t feel like stuffing a sticky bun into their gullet, the Chorizo and Feta Quiche may be the perfect option. Supported by a wheat crust, it is layered with feta and Gruyere cheese and chives. Expect a homemade taste, not store-bought. The dish pictured is half of a serving.

Tryst Coffeehouse Cholate Waffles

Who needs to diet when life is so short? This dish is for those who not only crave but need Nutella, strawberries and fudge chocolate batter in their life. This dish, the Death By Chocolate Dessert Waffle, might just knock you out with how sweet it can be.

If all of this isn’t enough to bring you to Tryst, the coffeehouse also offers events like Manhattan Mondays with free live jazz and a special menu of six variations on the classic Manhattan cocktail. You can also enjoy a movie from the 80s or the 90s on Throwback Thursdays with $5 Cosmopolitans in hand.

Pinch some pennies by visiting happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Sunday through Friday. The menu comes with $4 house red wine, a featured cocktail and a featured beer.

You can find Tryst at 2459 18th Street NW. Check out the full menu here.

  1. I just recently discovered this place while reading an article about best bars in Washington to meet singles at https://www.flirt.com/ and out of sheer curiosity I decided to make a visit. And long story short – I was hooked right away by the overall concept of this place. Good food and great atmosphere of this place made me regret that I didn’t discover it sooner. But now it’s my go-to place when I want to have some fun in Washington. Thumbs up for Tryst, you should definitely check it out.
