As we strolled to our cozy table, I noticed giant chalkboards gracing the walls with statements of their food philosophies, organic ingredients and funny quotations. The bar top was decked out with baskets of fresh produce and I could hear the subtle sounds of juices being squeezed and saute pans flaring in the open atmosphere.

You see, True Food Kitchen has so much more to offer than just a good meal. Their  eclectic menu boasts fresh organic ingredients with vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and even dairy free options. While I may have  lost some of you at the mention of healthy ingredients, don’t put the ear muffs on just yet. True Food Kitchen is a force to be reckoned with.

Their food is the kind that you dream of days later, as you find yourself craving things that you had never imagined would be in your vocabulary… let alone your diet.  This is not your mama’s health food. These are hand-crafted, perfectly concocted, home inspired dishes with health conscious undertones to back them up.

I decided to start our True Food Kitchen venture with one of their hand-crafted non alcoholic beverages. While I definitely like love my cocktails, it was refreshing to try a hydrating, fresh  blend of juices and fresh flavors in their Hangover RX;  coconut water, pineapple juice, vanilla bean and squeezed orange juice. It was like a little tropical vacation  in a glass.

Now that my thirst is quenched…let’s talk food. I began by ordering a few appetizers that sounded both interesting and adventurous. The Edamame Dumplings and the Wild Caught Albacore Tataki , were some of the most refreshing and vibrant appetizers I have yet to try.

The Edamame Dumplings were perfectly rounded pockets of flavor, sitting upon a fresh, warm, Asian-inspired broth. I was amazed at the punch of flavor I experienced in each bite. The tataki was beautiful to look at and just as beautiful to eat.  The avocado and the yuzu dressing paired perfectly with the soft subtle flavors of the fresh caught tuna.

While browsing the entree list we realized we had quite the difficult decision to make . Somehow, with the help of our knowledgeable server Elizabeth, we settled on a few exceptional choices. As the Quinoa Tagliatelle and the Grass-Fed Bison Burger were set on the table, I had no qualms for the decisions we made.

The Quinoa Tagliatelle was the most unique dish I have ever experienced. This is True Food Kitchens pasta dish, made with house made quinoa noodles, asparagus, peas and corn,  tossed in a smoked tomato broth. We decided to step it up a notch upon our server’s suggestion, adding shrimp to the pasta-inspired entree. Every bite beckoned for me to seek the next, as flavors burst out of the dish with each bite.

As we fought over this glorious entree, I finally caved and started on the Bison Burger.  I’m sorry to all the cows out there but bison is my new moo. The burger, which was stacked high upon a flaxseed bun, glistened with juices and was packed with unique flavors brought out by the umami and mushroom topping. The side of sweet potato hash and lemon kale, was a  perfect light pairing along side the Bison Burger.

As if the food wasn’t mouth-watering enough, we were helped with pairing a wonderful wine to go with the Tagliatelle;  a beautiful old world Italian red wine, that brought out the wholesome & rustic  flavors of the hand-made pasta.

After debating (hardly) we decided we were just not quite finished exploring the flavors of True Food Kitchen. We ordered two desserts; the Flourless Chocolate Cake and the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp. The fresh flavors of the juicy strawberries paired with the slight bitter crispness of the rhubarb, had me sliding the dessert closer inch by inch. The Flourless Chocolate Cake was just the right amount of cocoa and was dense but not overwhelmingly sweet.

They both paired perfectly with the vanilla ice cream but for me the highlight of the dessert experience? The house-made coconut whipped cream. Can you say amazing??? I certainly can. It was amazingggg. I caught myself eating the whip cream solo with my dessert spoon. I put a dollop in my coffee. Hell I could drink it. It was a perfect addition.

As the Arizona rain started beating down on the windows,  I sat back sipping my cappuccino and thought, “this is what True Food Kitchen is all about“. Real ingredients; real, whole, healthy foods, made to taste like home in the warmest atmosphere imaginable.
