Tacocraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar Miami Review
By Jordan Elbaum
One word – Guacamole. I thought I was obsessed with guacamole until I walked into Tacocraft – They understand! I have to start off by talking about the amazing combination they threw together on the night I was there. Chef Robbyns described it as “Miami in a bowl.” It had all the classic flavors of mojo pork topped with onions and crispy fried bits of yucca. The guacamole combinations and flavors change every few nights, which I completely love and hate at the same time because I have been craving the one I had every day since.
Now that I got that out of my system, on to the cocktails! General Manager Nicolas Carmona, has created some of the freshest and most delicious drinks I’ve had. We started off with the Black Diamond Margarita – Maestro Dobel “diamente”, Black Cherry puree, Simple Syrup, Lime, Black Sea Salt Rim. Have you ever had a black cherry margarita? Didn’t think so. I love that this was a little bit out of the box, it was sweet and tangy with the perfect tequila kick. The black salt on the purple mason jar really makes the drink stand out and go with the “black cherry” theme. The Smokey Bandito was also out of the box (which – to be honest, is what I look for on menu’s). Zignum Reposado Mezcal, Smoked Paprika Infused Passion Fruit, Fresh Lime Juice, Agave, Chipotle Cinnamon Rim. If you like spicy, this is the drink for you! Spicy, sweet, and smokey all in one. I loved the chipotle cinnamon rim, it really added to the cocktail to the actual flavor of the drink. Did I mention Tacocraft houses over 120 different Tequilas? I’ll just let that sink in.
I basically wanted everything on the menu but I had to start somewhere right? The Tuna and Avocado Toastada is the first decision I made without hesitation. Ahi Tuna, Avocado, Jalapeno Crema, Crispy Tostadas. Biting into the crispy tostada Piled high with huge chunks of tuna (they do not mess around with their tuna portions here!) that have been mixed with the jalapeno crema suddenly makes your day a whole lot better.
To take your day to the next level, order the oxtail empanadas – Braised Oxtail, Manchego, Pineapple Chimichurri and Habanero Aioli. I was blown away by the moistness of the meat inside of these, it was perfectly seasoned and juicy. Mixed with the chimichurri or the habanero aioli, you can’t go wrong.
Now, Tacocraft is obviously known for their craft tacos! You can find a different specialty taco for everyday of the week, just like their guacamole. We were lucky enough to try the Oyster Po’ Boy Taco – Fried Oyster, Pico De Gallo, Shredded Lettuce and Habanero Tartar. I honestly think I would eat anything fried, however, the toppings and flavors added to this taco make your taste buds dance.
One of the other tacos offered on the regular menu as well as the brunch menu is the Chorizo Taco – Mexican Chorizo, Cotija Cheese, Potato Hash, Fried Egg, Cilantro, Garlic Aioli. I was told you if you hold the taco the right way you can avoid the egg yolk running down your arms…needless to say I epically failed. It was so worth it. The egg yolk creates a nice sauce that the chorizo and potato hash soak up to make the perfect breakfast bite.
Lastly, all good meals end with churros and dulce de leche. They were warm and crispy but soft on the inside – just how they should be.
The chef brought out some of the Paletas for us to taste as well – Mexican popsicles. They come in the flavors Rice Pudding, Strawberry, Pina Colada, Guava and Pineapple & Chile. The rice pudding was my number one, it takes you right back to when you were young. It has bits of rice and the most amazing balance of cinnamon and sweet. Just get it.
