Stickhouse Gelato Review – I Came, I Saw, I Gelato
By Ariana Cade
Right off Broadway on the ever lively Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, the increasingly popular Stickhouse Gelato welcomes customers with open arms and a sign that reads, “I came, I saw, I gelato.” Stickhouse Gelato had originally introduced their artisan gelato on a stick in Italy and as of this month, they have opened their first store in California. The owner, Ismah, brings additional life to the store, with a smile and charm that expresses his enthusiasm for what he does.
The gelato and sorbet are made fresh daily with an abundance of flavors, ranging from classics like strawberry to stranger flavors like avocado. The milkier gelato flavors are dipped in a rich chocolate, milk, white, or dark, as well as a topping, hazelnut, coconut, or pistachios. Surprisingly, the chocolate shell does not break upon taking your first bite like most chocolate dipped desserts, allowing you to maintain a nice ratio of gelato to chocolate.
If chocolate shells aren’t quite your forte, you have an additional option of having affogato instead in which the gelato is dipped in a cup of espresso. The gelato didn’t melt despite the warm weather for quite some time and it did not freeze my teeth upon biting it.
The fruity sorbet flavors were best plain, leaving you with a refreshing after taste. The cantaloupe flavor in specific tasted as if you were biting into fresh cold fruit and would be an ideal snack by the beach. The strawberry flavor melted into my mouth with a strong sweet sensation followed by the sour lemon flavor, both of which left my taste buds more than satisfied.
It’s location, being a walking distance from the beach, adds additional incentive to visit this gelato haven. With new fall flavors to come later in the month, including peach cobbler and pumpkin pie, Stickhouse Gelato definitely seems to be a promising addition to the Third Street Promenade and the gelato scene here in Los Angeles.
