Steak 954 – Best CheeseSteak Ever
New friends and I ventured to Fort Lauderdale’s oceanfront W Hotel for fine dining at Stephen Starr’s exquisite restaurant Steak 954. As STARR multi-concept restaurants are renowned for their atmospheric drama, we were immediately impressed by the luxe steakhouse’s ambiance. The interior of Steak 954 mesmerizes diners with a visually stunning display of translucent jellyfish swimming inside a contemporary aquarium. While patrons seated in the outdoor patio, across from the beach, relax to ocean waves and breezes.
Once seated, we came under the excellent care of Aldo, our conversant waiter and sommelier, who presented us with extensive cocktail and wine menus as well as Chef de Cuisine Nicolay Adinaguev’s dinner selections.
Before joining the STARR Restaurant Group, the Peruvian-born and Miami-educated chef earned his chops working under James Beard award-winning chef and South Florida restaurateur, Allen Susser.
Instantly drawn to the Alaskan King Crab from Steak 954’s Raw Bar, I personally opted for a New England “Surf & Turf” experience as a throwback to my college days. Two meaty red crab legs arrived with sauce dish of spicy Japanese mayonnaise, in lieu of the customary drawn butter. This added mild heat to balance the natural sweetness of this wild caught crustacean.
My dinner companions made equally smart, but much more glamorous choices for appetizers, an amazing Lobster & Crab Ceviche with shreds of pickled coconut and perfectly Pan Seared Scallops with artisan bacon and served with baby heirloom tomatoes. Both were truly delicious, but the Atlantic Sea Scallops bathed in an absolutely delectable bacon-cabernet vinaigrette was a stand out. You will not be able to leave a shred of this mesmerizing sauce on the plate.
The 954 Cheesesteak is definitely not a typical steak sub. Served on a fresh baked brioche roll, three decadent components create this spectacular entrée, American Wagyu ribeye, truffled cheese whiz and foie gras! The exquisitely layered flavors from the buttery foie gras and heavenly truffle cheese sauce elevate this tender ribeye sandwich to the stratosphere. To counter-balance the richness of this dish, it is served with a split of Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial champagne. The extravagant 954 Cheesesteak was the best cheesesteak ever unanimously around the table and we have all been to Philly!
If you must select lighter fare, wise alternatives include the Branzino dressed with capers, picholine olives and marcona almonds, or the juicy and flavor-rich 14 oz. American Wagyu New York Strip Steak. As are all meats at Steak 954, steaks are flash grilled at 1700 degrees, but to your desired point of doneness.
Of the side dishes to accompany your meal, we highly recommend you disregard the calories, and order the velvety Truffle Mac & Cheese with a healthy dappling of crunchy broccoli florets, and the rotund Stuffed Hash Browns sinfully loaded with cream cheese.
