Salsa Fiesta Kendall – Fast-Causal Mexican
Salsa Fiesta Kendall is the family ran business’ newest outpost. The Town & Country Mall location is serving up fast-casual Mexican-inspired cuisine and made to order guacamole. The food is solid and very reasonably priced, the portion to price ratio is very agreeable. The food is simple and basic but fresh, prepared well, and makes use of tried and true flavor combinations. They also have four craft beers on tap which is a nice addition to have alongside some fire Mexican food.
I recommend that you try one of Salsa Fiesta’s Aguas Frescas, namely the Tamarind Agua Fresca. If you’ve never had tamarind before it might be difficult to pinpoint what exactly it is your drinking, but the agua fresca is plenty sweet and easy to drink. Even pesky eaters will enjoy the non-alcoholic tamarind drink.
To start, I recommend the Hot tamale and Guacamole. The Hot Tamale is Salsa Fiesta’s signature dip made in house with roasted corn and vegetables. The Hot Tamale is a bit of a misnomer since the dip is served cold, but the flavors are pleasing and the presence of pureed vegetables are easy to identify. What’s a good Mexican spot without awesome guacamole? The guac here is made fresh in house with top of the line Mexican Hass avocados.
I’m a huge taco fan so I had to try out a few tacos at Salsa Fiesta Kendall. You can choose between 2 or 3 tacos:
Spicy tangy taco comes with poblano rajas, corn, lettuce, crushed chili salsa and cheese. This is the spiciest taco on the menu and my second favorite taco of the night.
Guerrero taco includes mango, onions-cilantro, cabbage, cilantro cream and cheese. I tried the Guerrero tacos with both chicken and ceviche. Eating a ceviche taco was interesting, certaininly not for everyone, but I do think it’s a taco worth trying. Nothing transnational occurs when you put the ceviche in a taco, it’s as straight forward as it sounds.
Mero macho taco serves beans, lettuce, sour cream, chimichurri and cheese. To pair well with the chimichurri, my protein of choice for this taco was the steak. This was my favorite taco of the night so if you’re going to choose just ONE taco at Salsa Fiesta Kendall, this is the one!
What I love about the tacos in Salsa Fiesta Kendall, is that they are hearty and they come STUFFED with ingredients. The tacos come with double tortillas which gives the tacos more substance and allows for easier loading. Of course for a more authentic dining experience, go with the corn tortillas which are delivered fresh every morning.
The Acapulco salad is another of my favorite dishes from Salsa Fiesta’s menu. The salad comes with lettuce, corn, cilantro cream, fried plantain (tostones) pico de gallo and guacamole. I added carnitas to the Acalpulco salad and this is my recommendation if you order this plate. The fatty flavors of the carnitas pairs well with the cilantro cream. The carnitas also layer on the tostones very well, which makes for ease of consuming… it’s a match well made!
At first site the tortas seemed uninspiring, but they ended up being one of the more solid menu options. We ordered El Guero, a staple in the menu. El Guero includes Salsa Fiesta’s Milanesa torta and a fresh ceviche bowl with crispy tostones on the side. You get a little bit of everything with this option which is why it was one of my favorite plates of the night. The ceviche is not overly limey and acidic which is personally a huge relief. The ceviche is herby and toned down, the white fish used holds it’s own and really comes through. The milanesa torta is pure comfort food. The Milanesa sandwich includes crispy chicken, chipotle beans, poblano rajas, pickled onions, chihuahua cheese, cilantro cream, avocado and arugula. Everything works so well together in a sandwich, it’s utterly exquisite!
