Marina Del Rey’s Killer Shrimp – Killing the Competition
By Michael Vallens
Having grown up in Los Angeles, one can confirm that we Angelinos take our food culture very serious. One particular type of food has caught on like a wild fire during the Santa Ana’s, and that is seafood. Whether it is sushi or oysters, seafood has been gaining in popularity throughout the years. But there is reason to get excited. Marina Del Rey’s finest seafood restaurant, Killer Shrimp is celebrating the oceans finest offerings with a 30 day Seafood Festival while still offering their famous Killer Shrimp and much more.
I arrived to Marina Del Rey’s Killer Shrimp gorgeous on-the-water establishment with anticipation and excitement. On a beautiful evening, I decided to sit by the water and bask in some of the best real estate in LA.
I decided to start with the Dungeness Crab Tower. The base of this stacked sensation starts with a creamy avocado mousse, topped with a tomato confit and generous portions of Dungeness crab with sliced Citrus segments all topped with fragrant lemon vinaigrette. Light and vibrant, this was the perfect foil to the spiciness I was about to experience on my next dish.
The second dish was Killer Shrimps’ Killer Crab Claws. These Snow Crab Claws were prepared with lemon, butter and rosemary while tossed in Killer Shrimps patented spice mix. After a short tutorial on how to best eat these delights, I was soon experiencing the addictive nature of the secret spice mix. The Claws were sweet and tender and when dipped in its own sauce I knew they would haunt my dreams for eternity. And I am completely fine with that.
Finally, Marina Del Rey’s Killer Shrimp is known for their “Killer Shrimp“, a dish that is as iconic to Los Angeles as the Great Pyramids are to Cairo, Egypt. Presented in a generously sized bowl, large Shrimp (either shell on or shelled) are submerged in a life changing spicy seafood broth cooked for over 10 hours.
It is not only spicy but savory, buttery and so tasty, that one needs to experience this at least once in their lives. The spicy soup creates an addiction that can only be cured by consuming more and more. When paired with the fresh bread that accompanies the Killer Shrimp dish, one is immediately transported to the bayou in a state of nirvana.
After breaking my “Killer Shrimp cherry”, I can only be thankful that I live close enough to this haven of amazing flavors and textures that any craving can be cured. I am hopeful that Marina Del Rey’s Killer Shrimp will expand this great 30 day Seafood Festival menu to their other locations in the near future, so stay tuned. In the meantime, find any excuse to get over to the Marina and dive into a bowl of Killer Shrimp today!
