Hanjip – Culver City’s Sizzling New Spot For Korean BBQ
By Samantha Dockser
In the heart of Culver City, Hanjip serves upscale and ridiculously delicious Korean BBQ. Created and co-owned by Stephane Bombet and Chris Oh, Hanjip means “one house.” And it is certainly one house in which you can taste high quality meats, experience stellar customer service, all while dining in one of LA’s newest, trendiest spots.
Not to harp on the stylish décor, but everything from the paintings on the wall to the gold plate grills were designed special for Hanjip. And the extra care put in really shows. Hanjip is very specific about the artists they work with. Tommii Lin painted the exquisite art along the back wall.
And as for the gold plate grills on each table, they were made in Korea. Very few Korean BBQ restaurants have them. Not only do they look terrific and add to the elevated vibes, but the actually grill meat better, too.
And speaking of grilled meats…Hanjip’s menu is expansive. And from now until Jan 31st, be sure to stop in to try their DineLA menu. I was lucky enough to taste several items off the DineLA lunch menu.
Some highlighted dishes include the Bibimbap Bowl with Beef and Katsu Bowl with Fried Chicken. The Bibimbap Bowl, which literally translates to “mixed rice,” is a signature Korean dish. On a bed of rice, the Bibimbap contains moist pieces of beef, an assortment of vegetables, and a fried egg. It is seasoned so beautifully while still reasonably sized for a lunch portion. This dish was absolutely my favorite.
But not to be outdone, the Katsu Bowl with Fried Chicken is incredible, especially if you like curry. Also on a bed of rice, this dish is layered with grilled chicken and a vegetable assortment. The chicken is crispy on the outside by so tender on the inside. The curry on top added an extra kick.
Then on that sizzling gold plated grill, I enjoyed the Prime Beef Short Rib and the Kuobuta Pork Belly. Before cooking the meat, knowledgeable Hanjip employees rubbed onion and garlic all over the grill for seasoning. They then laid out the two strips of meat, let them cook, and cut them up into bite-sized pieces. Again, the quality of the meat is just remarkable. The cut up pieces of pork and beef practically melted in my mouth.
Hanjip also provides their diners with Banchan, small dishes served along side Korean cuisine. These included Daichon, Kimichi, bean sprouts, fish cakes, and (my personal favorites) potato, squid, and cucumber. These dishes are as beautiful as they are tasty.

I finished my meal off sipping on Barley Tea. It is a classic Korean tea, which helps break down the meat in your stomach. Barley Tea is so light, with hardly any noticeable taste, making it very refreshing.
Fun fact: Chef Chris Oh is a judge on Bravo TV’s newest food show, “Recipe for Deception.” Be sure to check it out Thursdays at 10pm.
Hanjip is all anyone can talk about. The foodie circuit is buzzing about their upscale Korean BBQ. And with its location in Culver City, those living on the west side in LA finally have easy access to some of the most incredible Korean BBQ around.
