Fish Market and Sushi Bar Review

Fish Market and Sushi Bar Review

Wandering through the college streets of Allston, in close proximity to Boston University, you’ll find a lot of mediocre pizza shops, chains and fast-food joints. Nestled within is a tiny sushi place called Fish Market and Sushi Bar. You may even miss with the plain white, basic signage. It is a very small restaurant, consisting of only a few tables and about an 8 seat bar. The interior is extremely minimalistic and clean.

At Fish Market and Sushi Bar the chefs work behind the small bar, creating an open concept to watch as they prepare everything to order. They have many unique options on their menu, such as the ‘Avocado Ball’ which won Boston Globe’s most memorable dish in 2010. Of course, we had to order one and it definitely lived up to the hype! Fresh tuna, cucumber and a light lemon-mayo stuffed inside a perfectly ripe avocado and topped with wasabi flying fish roe. So fresh and a great starter to share.

We followed with their house salads, which proved that simplicity is sometimes better. Lettuce, tomato and cucumber topped with their house made ginger dressing. It’s addicting! We also ordered the salmon tempura from the appetizer menu, which is two pieces of fresh salmon, lightly battered then topped with their avocado salad and fish roe. It was perfect and not too heavy.

As for their maki rolls, I’ve had many at other places and these are some of the best I’ve ever had. Very unique offerings and freshly prepared in front of you, it’s hard to go wrong here. The Route 66 shown here is salmon, crabstick, cream cheese, cucumber, avocado in a tempura roll. It is drizzled with eel sauce and a spicy mayo. Perfectly crispy without being heavy with super fresh, high quality ingredients.

Fish Market and Sushi Bar’s prices are extremely reasonable for the portion size and quality – plus they offer rotating specials that are worth checking out. They always have something unique to try. Something to consider if you are on a tight budget is their lunch menu – all items are under $12 and most are served with miso soup and a house salad to start.
