The Morrison in Atwater Village – A Foodie Review

Date Night at The Morrison

“Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate.”  – Alan D. Wolfelt

With the advent of the internet, searching for interesting places to dine has become an easy task. Thanks to websites like The Hedonist/Shedonist, one can read restaurant reviews, while actually getting to look at pictures of food and drinks served. It proves helpful in decision making and increases spreading good reviews through word of mouth. Yelp is another website that has proven to be popular and dependable. One of their great search options is finding a restaurant that is “dog-friendly”, meaning the restaurant has an outdoor area or patio that one can bring pets.

While researching, I quickly noticed The Morrison, located in Atwater Village. The owners, KLK Restaurant Group, the minds behind the popular Stout Burger and Beer, have another exciting venture on their hands. The reviews for The Morrison are glowing and it was a bonus that it was indeed dog-friendly. I went ahead and made reservations for 2 plus dog just in case the seating was limited, and I was glad I did.

The Morrison is a Scottish themed gastropub who’s known for their happy hour. The menu centers on burgers, sides, salads, desserts and there is even a small menu specially made for our furry four-legged friend. Reservations are recommended, especially if you want to bring a dog with you as seating is limited. Upon arrival, we were taken to the narrow but accommodating patio facing Los Feliz Blvd. Inside the pub, there was plenty of seating and TV’s showcasing the evening’s baseball games and soccer matches. The place was buzzing with people who were clearly enjoying the atmosphere.

We received our menus and decided to order a couple of beers from their extensive selection while ordering a side of “Brussels” to start. The Brussels sprouts side dish at The Morrison is topped with chopped hazelnut and caramelized beautifully in a Safflower Oil. The taste is smoky, salty and sweet. I find it amazing that Brussels sprouts are often over looked and might scare some people off because of its underserved reputation. If one can learn to cook Brussels sprouts like they do at The Morrison, adults and children alike would be chomping at the bit for a bite of this delectable veggie.

Our waiter Scott was very fun to chat with and knowledgeable in regards to the menu. We ordered the “Cock-a-Doodle Do”, chopped chicken and rice for the dog. Offered in a big doggy bowl, the portions are perfect for the medium to large sized dog. If you bring a petite pup, then anticipate on bringing home some leftovers.

I pondered over the list of burgers and ended up choosing The Bacon Burbonator (pictured below) for my main course. The Burger was paired with a side of pickles topped with pink pickled onions (pictured above). They were fresh, sweet and palate cleansing; A nice complement to the bold flavors of the burger. The Bacon Burbonator consisted of a nice sized, well seasoned beef patty, two slices of thick cut bacon, a smear of blue cheese and onion jam all placed on a fluffy Brioche bun with a steak knife placed through the center to give it some stability for presentation. The burger was flavorful, juicy and cooked to a perfect medium as ordered. The blue cheese provided a rich bite, the bacon was crisp and with the savory flavor of the onion jam, it was quite the combo. The size was perfectly sufficient and when finished eating, I was left satisfied.

My better half ordered a Bun-less Cheese Burger topped with avocado over a bed of chopped romaine lettuce, a healthy option. The burger was cooked to a desired Medium plus. When all was said and done, there was not a morsel left on the plate.

Our waiter Scott revealed to us that The Morrison was popular and drew a crowd on most nights, but especially when there is a show going on at the Greek Theater. One should keep in mind the Greek’s schedule when making dinner plans. I know for a fact, I will be at The Morrison to experience their renowned Happy Hours (3pm to 7pm) and plan on taking a Lyft to the Greek.
