Coconut Midtown Review – Best Thai Food in Midtown Sacramento
By Katelyn Ryan
In a growing city like Sacramento, the food scene is flowing. It is a capital city with phenomenal food choices everywhere you turn. With the vast amount of restaurants to choose from, one really cannot go wrong. On a warm sunny evening, my partner and I ventured out to Coconut Midtown for a taste of Thailand. When we arrived there was a line out the door, leaving a slight wait to sit down. The wait time moved quickly and we were soon sat at a quaint little table outside amidst the excitement of the city. We were immediately served ice cold water flavored with lemon and lime slices, which was exceptionally satisfying on a gorgeous late summer day.
Coconut Midtown is a tiny hole-in-the-wall joint that is bringing uniquely crafted Thai food to the locals. They use only local ingredients for their innovative Thai dishes. It is the perfect place to have an affordable meal right in the heart of Midtown Sacramento. The restaurant is located next to bright businesses and fun shops on busy J Street, ideal for a day spent downtown.
My partner and I decided on an appetizer and two shared entrees. We had difficulty choosing from the diverse menu of offerings, but we decided on two noodle dishes. We started our meal off with the Sat-tay Chicken Appetizer that came out of the kitchen very quickly. The appetizer was comprised of chicken that was marinated in a special Thai herb mixture before being skewered and grilled until tender. The chicken skewers were paired with a creamy peanut sauce and vegetable garnish. The flavors of the succulent chicken matched well with the savory peanut sauce.
Our chosen entrees included the Thai food favorite, Pad Thai and we shared a huge bowl of authentic spiced noodle soup. The classic Pad Thai is done a little different at Coconut Midtown. It has a strong vibrant citrus flavor and a deep orange color. The pan fried rice noodles combine with bean sprouts, green onion, peanuts, homemade pad Thai sauce and your choice of protein. This bright full-flavored noodle dish is served in a hefty portion, perfect for sharing.
The Noodle Soup at Coconut Midtown emits a perfumed aroma as it arrives to the table. Upon first bite, I could detect a broth made with a comforting variety of spices including saigon cinnamon. The satisfying blend of spices turns this soup into an inviting experience. This authentic dish is served in a gigantic bowl full of the wonderful broth, rice noodles, cilantro, onions, bean sprouts, and your choice of protein.
There are a number of vegan and gluten free menu options to choose from for those on limited diets. Delivery is offered via Postmates, a 24/7 on-demand delivery service serving on bikes and automobiles. Fresh vibrant Thai food is at your service.
Coconut Midtown is the perfect place to go for a sensational, affordable meal on the town. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Because the restaurant is tiny, I suggest giving yourself some extra time in case there is a wait.
Happy Hour is available everyday from 4:30-6:00 pm with $3 Appetizers, $3 Beers on Tap, and $3 House Wines. The beauty of Thailand shines through in its food. There is always a good time for the complex flavors of Thai food at Coconut Midtown.
