Classic Le Palais: A Review
By Michaeline Anderson
Classic Le Palais is a truly unique bakery located on the Westside of Los Angeles. Not only does the bakery offer classic desserts, but they also offer traditional Persian and Jewish pastries, challah, cakes and ice creams (if you have never tried saffron ice cream you absolutely must). In addition to a wide variety of products, everything is dairy free and kosher certified. The glass cases are filled with enticing looking cookies and gorgeous ready-made cakes. Along the walls of the bakery are samples of the custom cakes that they offer. For any occasion ranging from weddings to bat mitzvahs to birthday parties in scales from the simple to the extraordinary, Classic Le Palais can make any cake you dare dream of.
After being introduced the history and the concept of the Classic Le Palais I started my sweet adventure. First I tried four of their mini muffins: blueberry, lemon poppy seed, carrot walnut and chocolate chip. The blueberry and lemon poppy seed were my favorites- the tart lemon and sweet blueberries shone brightly, perfect for any morning. All of these muffins would make a perfect little breakfast with coffee or be perfect when hosting brunch or a baby or bridal shower.
My favorite desserts at Classic Le Palais were the Mille Feuille and flourless chocolate cake. Mille Feuille is a classic French dessert combines creamy custard with flaky layers of pastry. The luscious cream (how the heck is this dairy free?!) is punctuated with razor thin layers of puff pastry that provides the ideal juxtaposition between crisp and soft. The flourless chocolate cake is like eating velvet and is perfect for anyone staying away from gluten, but doesn’t want to give up on cake. The rich interior is similar to mousse, but sturdier and is encased in thin veneer of chocolate. These little cakes are adorable and would be the ideal end to an elegant meal.
I also sampled the Classic Le Palais tiramisu, fruit tart and two different flavors of mousse. The tiramisu had the perfect amount of coffee flavor, not too overpowering, but great for coffee lovers. The beautiful fruit tarts reminded me of the patisseries in Paris with glass cases full of tarts and they tasted just like them too! The tart shell stood up perfectly to the cream filling and the fresh fruit matched perfectly. Both of the mousses had great flavor and texture, incredibly light and airy, but very fulfilling.
Having just recently married into a Persian family, I get very excited whenever I get to try to new Persian desserts. With ingredients like rose water, cardamom and honey- Persian desserts are truly unique. The Persian desserts I sampled at Classic Le Palais were all amazing- sweet, syrupy, and crispy. The exotic flavors shown brightly and were not overpowered by the sweetness of the honey.
One of the best things about all of the desserts at Classic Le Palais that you can actually taste the nuanced flavors of each dessert instead of just sugar, which you find in many pastries and commercially baked goods. You can see and taste just much care and effort they put into all their products. Whether you are in the area looking for a sweet treat, ordering an array of desserts for a party or planning the wedding cake of your dreams, Classic Le Palais is the perfect bakery.
