Buttercream Cupcakes and Coffee, created and owned by husband and wife team of Kristine Graulich and Jose F. Cuellar, opened in their hometown of Coral Gables in February 2008. Since then, they have become a neighborhood staple and a mecca for all things creamy.
When Kristine was a teenager, she dreamed making cupcakes for a living, but because of how unrealistic it seemed, the dream became somewhat of a joke amongst her and her family. But, after a visit to Magnolia bakery in NYC, a young Kristine decided to make this fantasy a reality.
Buttercream offers over 30 cupcake flavors, layer cakes, and their own incredible blend of coffee. With a team of 12 employees, Buttercream bakes fresh everyday cupcakes that are all trans fat free and all suitable for vegetarians. Buttercream’s cupcakes are all made with sweet cream butter and fresh, real products. For instance, any cupcake with guava, strawberry, or lime in the title is made with the real ingredients and colored by the real ingredients. There is a reason people come back time and time again for these treats.

Kristine and Jose are proud of all their flavors but certainly have their favorites. Jose especially loves Buttercream’s Lime Cupcake. Both the buttercream frosting and the cake itself have real lime zest in them. It is sweet and refreshing. The perfect treat for a hot Miami day.
As a self proclaimed chocoholic, Kristine’s favorite flavor is Triple Chocolate. It is rich and decadent. The sprinkles on top, imported from France, are pure chocolate.
Three fan favorite flavors include the Guava, Red Velvet, and Oreo cupcakes. The Guava is made with guava cake, heavy cream cheese buttercream, and guava drizzle.
The Red Velvet is made with a lighter cream cheese buttercream. I am not usually a fan of red velvet, but this cupcake is amazing. I am now a changed woman.
The Oreo cupcake’s buttercream frosting tastes just like the inside of an Oreo and there are Oreo cookies mixed in. It’s creamy and delectable. Much like an Oreo cookie, you couldn’t possibly eat just one.
My two favorite flavors of the day were the Chocolate Ganache and the Dulce de Leche. The Chocolate Ganache’s vanilla buttercream frosting is dipped in chocolate. Not only does it taste incredible, but it looks beautiful. Really that can be said for all of Buttercream’s cupcakes. Your eyes will eat before your stomach does.
Then the Dulce de Leche is so sweet and the cake is so moist. I am a big fan.
You should make sure to stop into Buttercream in Coral Gables next time you are in the area, but you can also buy Buttercream’s cupcakes at Spring Chicken, Books and Books, and at Neiman Marcus’ Mariposa Restaurant in Merrick Park.
And if this isn’t enough to convince you the cupcakes are amazing, Buttercream’s Coral Gable’s shop proudly features an autographed photograph of Celine Dion, who frequently has Buttercream cupcakes delivered. These cupcakes are the real deal.
Thank you Buttercream Cupcakes and Coffee for a delicious visit. I can’t wait to stop back in. One of my few college regrets is not finding you sooner 😉
