Black Hole Coffee House Review
Work, Wine, Dine all at the same time
Welcome to the Black Hole Coffee House. A coffee lovers gravitational pull of java, pastries, sandwiches, wine, and beer. Whether you’re looking to sit on your computer and appear busy, talk about the latest Game of Thrones, or meet that creepy blind date—Black Hole Coffee House offers an atmosphere for all.
Located in the Museum District, Black Hole Coffee House exudes character as soon as you open the door. The vibrant art, mismatched furniture, and well-worn couches surrounded by instrumental music, makes for a welcoming work or social spot in Houston.
So you have your necessary menu items: coffee, lattes, pastries, and sandwiches. I decided to defy the Houston heat with their iced coffee. I anticipated cringing at the choice of [what is basically] bitter coffee grounds, water, and ice, but the outcome was quite surprising.
Without any sweeteners the drink itself presented a bold, smooth, roasted flavor. Maybe the man sitting and playing the ukulele in the background added to the deluxe experience—but nevertheless their bold roast is a must have.
It was mid-Friday; we comfortably sat on a couch shared by a girl and her MacBook, and two young ladies chatting across from us. The setup of open seating next to strangers made for an intriguing experience.
We started with the hummus that came with a heaping side of lightly-seasoned pita chips. Everything is prepared that day so they may instantly serve you. The hummus concoction was crisp, creamy, and lightly flavored with oils so that you don’t get an overbearing taste of spices in the mix. It made for a tasteful appetizer and an introduction of good things to come.
My friend had the turkey and goat cheese sandwich. Goat-cheese is a delicacy that can overbear an entrée, but this sandwich was a delectable mix of juicy turkey and crunchy lettuce infused with a hint of creamy goat cheese and smoky bacon. I recommend asking for their unique mustard for just the right addition of tangy seasoning.
I had the tomato basil and mozzarella sandwich. The cool, rich, mozzarella complimented the juicy tomatoes and zesty vinaigrette sauce well. This dish isn’t blasting with flavor, but simple and delightful for the non-meat eaters out there.
Finally, we had the Coconut Tres Leches Cake where my life reached a point of perfection. The bottom layer is a tender brown crust under a tart and creamy lemon yogurt topped with moist sponge cake and a fluffy coconut icing. Now wipe the drool coming from your mouth and try one for yourself.
