Home cooking is hard to find outside the house. 27 Restaurant has really mastered the environment and draws you into feeling that you are at home from the moment you step into this Miami Beach historic house turned restaurant. We were invited in by Velocity to learn about their cool & beautiful dining experience app as well as preview 27’s new food and drink menu. Should have a full review of this awesome app coming soon.
Every item that comes to the table is presented on a different dish you could find at home and no two tasting plates were the same. The food you’ll find here pays tribute to the diversity of Miami and its melting pot of cultures. Over the course of your meal, you can taste flavors ranging from Latin America to Europe to the Middle East. The menu invites you to split family style and trigger your different senses, so be prepared to take your taste buds on a gastronomical journey.
Start your meal off with a trip to Asia and quench your thirst with the Bangkok Bangkok. The craft cocktail incorporates Bulleit Rye, Wild Turkey Rye and Meletti Amaro, but the spiced Thai tea reduction mixed in will have you thinking you’re in Thailand. You could easily have a handful of these, but be careful you wouldn’t want to end up Hangover style with a face tattoo.
Collard greens have many a time been seen as a side item; you might not envision grilled them as being the highlight to a dish. Hot items in a cold salad doesn’t necessarily seem like a natural fit but it surely worked here. It was topped off with a tamarind dressing which many a time has been seen in warm Asian style salads. It is of no surprise then that the balance of this dish was a favorite amongst the table.
If you could slurp a sauce, it would be the coconut curry broth that accompanies the daily catch. Warm and buttery, the taste lingered in the back of our minds for the remainder of the day. It really brought us back to the notion of home cooking and felt like we were embodying Velocity’s idea of the event, “Mi Casa es Tu Casa”. Don’t miss out on this one!
While one could easily get through this menu and be full, there is always room for dessert. The Tres leches. If you’re a Miami local, you know the creaminess and silky nature that you’ll get from this cake; however, if you’re stopping through on vacation, be prepared for a luscious, light airy sponge cake that milks it real good with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream. Come one, come all and be sure to bring a group that you consider family because 27 restaurant will make you feel like you’re dining at home, but with a talented chef in charge.
