Prairie Guest House – Cozy Charm and Character Resides in Fisher, IN
By Josephine Layug
If you’re the type who jumps on the opportunity for a quick getaway over the weekend, we’ve found the place for you! Prairie Guest House in Hamilton County of Fisher, Indiana is just as inviting and relaxing as it sounds; nestled on two acres of land, John and Karen Newton offer a slice of tranquility in their mid-1800’s Gothic farmhouse with 9 guest bedrooms, private baths and cozy common rooms. The guest house also boasts home-cooked breakfasts and a yoga studio, and no B & B is complete without friendly feline company.
My mom and I took a quick 3-hour drive from Chicago to spend 1 day and 2 nights. John and Karen were so hospitable, that even when we were running late on our arrival, they urged us to take our time and offered to leave the lights on in our room so we could get comfortable right away.
The next morning, John personally made our breakfast: Scrambled Eggs with Shallots, English Muffins with Fig Jelly, Mixed Potato Hash, Fresh Fruit, Crispy Bacon, and Fresh-squeezed Blood Orange Juice. We enjoyed every single bite of our homemade breakfast.
After breakfast, we explored the property and Hamilton County. The Prairie Yoga Studio was very clean and serene, and we felt relaxed as soon as we stepped in. The Rustic Barn on the land was so charming, and we were told the Prairie Guest House will be expecting to hold more events in the historic structure. We crossed the road to Connor Prairie’s Historic Park. During the Spring and Summer, guests can enjoy 800 acres of land and an over-sized treehouse to rummage through. The surrounding area is very family-friendly but also perfect for adult groups to peacefully meander about.
It was time for lunch! We were suggested to try Pure Eatery, which showcases its super fresh ingredients. We started with the Pure Fresh Platter: Pita Bread, Spinach and Garlic Hummus, Carrot Sticks, Cucumber and Ranch Dressing. Our entrees were a Grilled Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Clam Chowder Soup and a Grilled Cheese with Dill Potato Salad. We definitely raved over our sides: that was the best potato salad I have ever had, and my mom loved her clam chowder.
For Dinner, we chose DIVVY, which serves American Tapas. This restaurant was a great choice for us because we continually ordered small plates until we were all full. We ordered DIVVY’s Brussel Sprouts, a local favorite. The Sprouts were Grilled and Dressed with Pine Nuts and EVOO. We also ordered the Scallop Wonton Tacos, Brie Crostini, Calamari, Banana Eggrolls, and a Chocolate Tarte to finish. Oh My! The Chocolate Tarte was almost too pretty to eat. Almost.
Our final evening in Indiana was capped with a performance by the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra in the Palladium. My mother and I had such an eventful and excellent day with a fantastic finish.
If you are in need of a change of scenery or a weekend of “ahh” moments, I highly recommend you check in to the Prairie Guest House in Fisher, Indiana. Every community member we met in Hamilton County was hospitable and helpful with suggestions. John and Kate Newton were excellent hosts, and they can also offer great ideas of how to spend your stay. This is an excellent location to visit as the weather warms up for a romantic get-a-way, a family vacay, or some girl time. I suggest you inhale, exhale, and book your stay before rooms fill up!
