Issaya Siamese Club Bangkok – The Best Massaman Curry

Issaya Siamese Club Bangkok – The Best Massaman Curry

Although Issaya Siamese Club is hidden away in a 100 year old Thai villa, it is by no means a secret. This special spot is number 39 on the famed Asia Best Restaurants list. Issaya has been open since December 2011 and is the flagship restaurant for internationally renowned Chef Ian Kittichai. The chef melds traditional Thai cuisine with progressive cooking methods. He is also a huge proponent of true farm to table cooking with a luscious herb garden in the back that is picked daily to cook his cuisine.

I loved dining at Issaya Siamese Club. The venue exudes a very homey yet refined and trendy vibe. Patrons can choose to dine on the gorgeous terrace. The food was splendid and the Massaman Curry Lamb Shank (Mussuman Gae) is mind blowingly tasty and will make you squirm in your chair from delight.

Massaman is so complex and gratifying and Issaya Siamese Club’s version was the best I have ever had! Massaman is not like the other curries you are use to. It has a unique blend of ingredients that makes it so different and enrapturing. There is cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cumin, bay leaves, nutmeg and mace combined with dried chili peppers, cilantro seeds, lemongrass, galangal, white pepper, shrimp paste, shallots, garlic and coconut cream! Probably best to let the experts handle it unless you love to cook.

While it can be served with various types of meat or seafood, Issaya chooses lamb and it is superb. The lamb shank is braised and melts off the bone from just blowing on it. You may not be able to stop yourself from picking up the bowl and drinking straight from it, even in the fancy atmosphere.

I also loved the drinks, chicken, broken bucket and doing shots of Yadon with Adit, the awesome GM. Check out my video review of Issaya Siamese Club:
