Orange County’s Slidebar and Gringo Bandito team to create the Cali Gringo Taco
When two creative forces meet in order to craft art, the public is the ultimate beneficiary. This couldn’t more true for the Cali Bandito Taco, a result of the partnership between two of Orange County’s most prominent brands: Fullerton’s Slidebar and Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce created by Dexter Holland from Offspring fame. This partnership is destiny happening right before our very eyes.
The legendary Slidebar, host to countless concerts (including The Offspring) and events like KROQ’s Miss Double D-cember, has become the defacto small concert venue with great eats and stiff drinks for residents of OC and the LA area. There couldn’t be a better hot sauce company to team up with other than OC’s Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce. This is a match made in Rock and Roll heaven. In the end, the Cali Bandito Taco was created into existence and fully incorporated the flavors that define both The Slidebar and Gringo Bandito.
The Cali Bandito Taco is Slidebar’s take on a deconstructed California burrito and starts with a freshly house-made tortilla, your choice of protein or veggies smothered with Gringo Bandito Red Marinade, and combined with french fries, cheddar cheese, sour cream and avocado crème.
The tortilla was evidently made with an authentic Mexican recipe as it was remarkably fresh; sturdy enough to hold the helpings and provide a appealing roasted corn aroma and texture. Of the three tacos presented, one was made with carne asada, one with carnitas and finally a veggie option featuring Portobello mushrooms. All proteins and veggies on the Cali Gringo Taco adopted the intense kick and zesty flavor of Gringo Bandito’s Red Marinade.
The carne asada and carnitas were amazingly tasty and tenderly prepared. I was soon thanking the “Meat Gods” for the conception of this work of art. However, it was the veggie option that left me wide eyed and salivating. The Portobello mushroom is the perfect meat substitute because of its meat-like texture and the noteworthy ability to soak up all flavors. The Cali Gringo Taco with Portobello mushrooms by itself would be worth making a trip to The Slidebar. The real winners here are us, the paying customer! There is no price tag on the experience that one gets from benefiting from the genius and innovation of these two iconic OC establishments.
