Best of the Munchies closed out the 2015 South Beach Wine & Food Festival (#sobewff) for people who still had room left in their bloated bellies after an intense Epicurean weekend. This event proved that munchies are not just for stoners and drunks anymore. Almost everybody loves greasy, fattening comfort food and this event was what fat camp kids’ dreams are made of.
Andrew Zimmern hosted a magnificent event filled with some sweet and salty delicacies that you have never even imagined. It was a nice contrast to some of the more fancy pants Sobewff events and people came out in droves to get greasy. The event initiated the The Munchies: People’s Choice Awards, which allows you to vote for your fave munchies through March 31.
My best bite of the night (and I tried almost every bite), was the outfreakinstanding Mojo Donut’s Bakla-cropolis. This pastry gift from the Heavens is a cross between baklava and a croissant. They employ croissant dough and stuff it with chopped nuts drenched in a tantalizing honey and butter syrup. It is ridiculously sweet, but one of the best desserts I have ever had.

My silver medal went to the almost reopened STK Miami who created a Churro Milkshake that intoxicated and took full advantage of my sweet tooth. It was comprised of house-made dulce de leche ice cream, cinnamon liquor and a churro dipping stick.
Holeman and Finch Public House, an Atlanta institution took the bronze with its sublime and unique Griddled Pimento Cheese with Benton’s bacon & bread and buttered pickles.
The famous Charleston comfort food mecca, Hominy Grill graced our mouths with their Okra & Shrimp Beignet with salsa and cilantro sour cream.
Coral Springs based Sauced Up Food Truck won my ingenuity prize with its brilliant Mac-n’-Cheese Stuffed Chicken Wing. When you bite into this Buffalo garlic parmesan drenched chicken wing the mac n cheese reveals itself.
Best of the Munchies is one of the top and most affordable events of the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. We will definitely be there again next year and so should you.
