Art Basel Guide 2016 – Fairs, Parties & Music
Art Basel Guide– Dust of your jackets, scarfs and tuxes cuz Art Basel is back of course bigger than last year. Art Basel debuted in Miami Beach in 2002 and has blown up to be the favorite annual winter meeting place for the international party & art world.
On December 1–4, once again, Art Basel Miami will take over the Miami Beach Convention Center. Midtown and Wynwood.
We’ve put together an Art Basel Guide of what we think are some of the best fairs, parties and music spots to Basel it up:
SCOPE Miami Beach 801 Ocean Dr, (between Ocean Drive and 8th St.), Miami Beach, FL 33139 SCOPE is always our favorite Art Basel satellite fair with its vivid, vibrant and mind bending pieces. SCOPE’s mission is to tap into the cultural psyche and to present only the most pioneering work across multiple creative disciplines. It is always a joy to take Art Basel Scope Pictures every year.
Art Miami– The city’s original and longest running contemporary and modern art fair will return for its 27th year. Art Miami will present an array of iconic and exemplary works, dynamic projects and special installations with a focus on presenting the finest investment quality paintings, photography, prints, drawings, design, sculpture and video art, with works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Art Miami’s 2016 line-up will feature over 130 galleries from more than twenty different countries, exhibiting important modern masters and blue chip contemporary artists as well as the most sought after living artists from the around the world – including Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning and Ed Ruscha. Joining the esteemed contemporary artists to be offered at Art Miami are Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, who displayed his “Hooked” exhibition at both Art New York and Art Southampton earlier in the year. The acclaimed actor and artist will debut his most recent works at this year’s fair.Art Miami kicks off the opening day of Art Week on Tuesday, November 29th, with a VIP Private Preview to benefit Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) in the Art Miami Pavilion.
Aqua Art Miami – The sister satellite fair to Art Miami, Aqua Art Miami will celebrate its 12th edition at the Aqua Hotel (1530 Collins Avenue Miami Beach, FL 33139), from Wednesday, November 30th to Sunday, December 4th, 2016.
One of the best fairs for emerging art during Miami’s Art Week, Aqua Art Miami has consistently earned critical recognition for presenting vibrant and noteworthy international art programs with a particular interest in supporting young and established galleries with strong emerging and mid-career artists, while retaining the fair’s signature relaxed vibe and lively energy. The fair’s unique environment– in a classic South Beach hotel with spacious exhibition rooms that open onto a breezy, intimate courtyard – has become a favorite gathering spot for collectors, curators and art-lovers to discover fresh talent and acquire new works while exchanging cultural ideas and forming meaningful connections.
CONTEXT Art Miami – Now in its fifth year, CONTEXT Art Miami is expanding. Dedicated to the development and reinforcement of emerging and mid-career artists, CONTEXT will, for the first time, take place in a standalone 65,000-square-foot pavilion just one block away from the Art Miami Pavilion in the middle of Midtown.
As an exciting addition this year, new exhibitors to CONTEXT Art Miami include London’s Paul Stolper Gallery, which will offer an installation of new works from English musical genius and visual artist, Brian Eno. Eno will show new light boxes, which seamlessly phase through combinations of seductive self-generated ‘colourscapes.’ Zurich’s Galerie Andres Thalmann will make its first appearance at the fair, presenting a solo booth of works by Katja Loher. Gibbons & Nicholas from Dublin also will make their debut in Miami with a selection of emerging, mid-career and established Irish artists.
SPectrum is “where contemporary meets extraordinary” and we have a couple artists we are going to check out. Huayuan Art is an engaging presentation of works by renowned Chinese artists Liu Junqi, Shen Yongping, and Wang Lihua. The exhibition will dive in to the unique categories of Suzhou Embroidery and Dunhuang Art. Lihua is a master embroider. Junqi and Yongping’s works are inspired by the murals of Dunhuang Caves, located in China’s northwestern Gansu Province on the edge of the Gobi Desert. All three figures have played a vital role in the revival of the historical art of the Silk Road, the core to the Huayuan Art’s narrative. This is located in booth 218.
You can also check out and support local artist Laelanie Art at booth s825. Spectrum is located at Spectrum, 1700 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33132.

New Club – Ora Finally Shines
Miami Beach nightlife is ripe for a nightlife revival, and ORA is bringing glamour back, with its luxe décor, impeccable service and multi million-dollar design. With an all-star team of nightlife veterans, helmed by hospitality tastemakers Ryan Van Milligen, Dana Dwyer, Yani Kontos, and Greg See. ORA will deliver on the promise of elevating the nightclub experience where thoughtful touches, tableside mixology, and old-world service and appeal.
It’s only appropriate that ORA is launching in time for Art Basel, with its artistic décor created and executed by world-renowned French designer Francois Frossard. For ORA, Frossard, whose most recent masterpiece was the redesign of iconic club Queen Paris, has produced a lavish and dramatic interior, featuring a cathedral ceiling, classic boiserie paneling throughout, marble bars, sleek and sexy banquettes and state-of-the-art lighting fixtures. Adding to the cultural conversation, guests will dance alongside works of art by Banksy and Murakami.
ORA also has bragging rights for its mixology program, which will be uniquely offered both tableside and at the bar. Veteran mixologist Rodger Gillespie was hired to reinvent the staid “bottle service” standard of routine mixers. Instead, assigned mixologists will work with clients to create specialty cocktails with a variety of ingredients directly at the table. Sipping a perfectly shaken martini in high style is now a reality. In the upstairs Anti-Social room, cocktailing will reign supreme with an innovative menu and personalized cocktails, including a “chronological flight” of martinis that features four mini martinis in their most popular formulations spanning from the late nineteenth century to today.
While notable, high-end art fairs roll into Miami for Art Basel, Super 8® will host an exhibit enticing gallery-goers to snatch a piece of art – for free. Once an overlooked decoration at its hotels across North America, Super 8 is taking its art “off the wall” to make way for the brand’s contemporary redesign, already available at nearly 60% of hotels. Nearly 100 eclectic pieces of “not-so-super” art will be free for the taking, on a first-come, first-serve basis, at When The Art Comes Down: Works from The Super 8 Collection Miami Edition.
The Miami event will feature a “certified Bob Ross instructor” who will guide attendees on how to paint like Bob as a way of celebrating him and this kitschy category of art, helping give Bob a much-deserved Basel moment of his own. Also, each of the Super 8 works on display will be named using Bob’s catch phrases as further tribute.
Together Super 8 and Bob Ross remind us that art isn’t just for the chosen few – it’s for everyone. Hoity-toity art? No thanks. If you like art with “charm,” then this event is right for you. Super 8 hopes Miami’s art fair community will share in the enthusiasm of the collection, appreciate its “value” and join in celebrating the kindred connection to Bob Ross.
Calling all starving artists! Coinciding with Miami Art Week, Shake Shack® and Harry’s Pizzeria® will each offer a collaborative limited-edition menu item from Monday, November 28th to Sunday, December 4th at their respective South Florida locations.

The meaning behind OLLA translates to a ceramic jar used for cooking where dishes will be served in shareable bowls for a family style experience.
Helmed by Chef Scott Linquist of COYO Taco, the concept will focus on the soul origin of Mexico. Linquist is also notable for developing and stewarding the growth of the infamous restaurant brand Dos Caminos.

Support the Students-
This Miami Art Week, you will be able to not only see art, but experience it. Paris Perfumes Inc. and CARON Paris are partnering with Life is Art, Virtual Relief and Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU) to present pARTicipate, an immersive art experience blending virtual-reality, visual art, music, film and fashion at Red Dot Miami, the juried, contemporary art show in the heart of Miami that is sponsoring the initiative. Red Dot Miami is located at 1700 NE 2nd Avenue Miami, FL 33132.
We invite you to visit and cover this art exhibition where visitors will be able to interact with and become part of the art, as well as create their own work through Virtual Reality technology, while inspired by the music, videos and fashion garments that the MIU students crafted for CARON Paris’ latest campaign, Awaken Your Senses, which explores all five senses through artisan craftsmanship.
pARTicipate will offer the following to all participants:
- Experience a virtual-reality viewer and create 3-dimensional artwork influenced by the music created by the MIU students.
- View short films by the MIU students in an engulfing visual perspective, as the films are projected throughout the exhibition space.
- View the fashion creations of MIU students displayed on mannequins and use motion capture to virtually try them on and model them in the virtual reality
- “Paint” on a model with light through use of the virtual reality viewer. (For a small fee, which will support the two non-profits: Life is Art and Virtual Relief, participants will be able to print their work and keep as a souvenir.)
